Dr. Nataraja Rama Krishna
Padma Shri Dr. Nataraja Rama Krishna was a legendary dance guru and cultural visionary who dedicated his life to reviving and preserving Indian classical dance traditions. Born in Bali Indonesia, he became one of the foremost exponents of Andhranatyam and played a pivotal role in bringing Perini Śiva Tāṇḍavam, a warrior’s dance from the Kakatiya dynasty, back to the stage after centuries of decline. His scholarship and artistry extended beyond performance—he meticulously researched temple inscriptions, manuscripts, and oral traditions to reconstruct forgotten dance forms, ensuring their authenticity and continuity. He has written over 40 books on dance traditions of Andhra Pradesh and ancient dance forms and served as a Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Sangeeta Natak Academy.
Dr. Rama Krishna founded institutions and trained countless disciples, many of whom became torchbearers of Andhranatyam and allied arts. His teaching emphasized both technical mastery and spiritual depth, blending tradition with innovation. Recognized nationally and internationally, he received the Padma Shri, ‘Nataraja’ and Bharata Kala Prapoorna for his cultural contributions. Through his vision, Andhranatyam and Perini gained global recognition, securing their place in the continuum of classical dance.
